Multinationals Sign UN Pact on Rights and Environment

The July 27, 2000 edition of the New York Times reports that executives of 50 multinational companies joined 12 labor associations and NGOs in a "global compact" to support human rights and international labor and environmental standards. The companies pledged to uphold these standards in the countries where they do business, even if not required to do so by the governments of those countries. The multinationals included DaimlerChrysler, Royal Dutch Shell, Nike, Unilever, Bayer, Dupont and Ericsson. Amnesty International and the World Wildlife Fund also signed, but other watchdog groups objected that the multinational signatories have poor records in their overseas operations and should not be accorded the status of UN partners.
