Bush Environmental Record Assailed

The Bush administration's attacks on the environment so far are only the tip of the iceberg, charges the Wolrdwatch Institute in its July/August report. In only its first four months in office, the administration has proposed numerous measures that could affect global climate and ecology. These have included suspended implementation of rules to strengthen environmental standards for hard rock mining on public lands, withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, and delaying a proposal to curtail runoff from large livestock operations. Other measures have been reversed after public outcry: suspending rules restricting soot emissions from diesel engines; ending salmonella testing for beef served in school lunches; and rejecting stricter standards for arsenic in drinking water.
