Group Alleges Death Squad Activity in Sinaloa

A Mexican group composed of the relatives of missing persons, the Frente Contra la Impunidad de Sinaloa, has asked the state human rights office to help locate 11 people kidnapped in the area in the 1990s. Some of the victims were taken away by individuals identifying themselves as federal agents.

Some observers support the idea that a death squad with links to law enforcement may be operating in Sinaloa. Drug traffickers are active in the border state and are reported to occasionally pass themselves off as police officers. Some alleged cartel members have also been found to have law enforcement uniforms and other equipment in their possession at the time of their arrest.

According to the US-Mexico border newsletter Frontera NorteSur, the three biggest drug cartels in the area were started by former law enforcement agents.
